Alfred Manuel Silva, beloved father, brother, and husband passed away peacefully at his home in El Paso surrounded by his loved ones. He was cared for by his wife of 32 years, Connie Frescas. He was a great man, loved and respected by many as a teacher, coach, and friend. His legacy will live on through the values and life lessons he shared throughout his 77 years of life.
Born to Maxine L. Silva, namesake of the Silva Health Magnet School, and Manuel M. Silva, Alfred was the fourth of seven children. After the death of his father in 1966, he soon became protector of the family and a father figure to his younger brothers George and Chuck Silva. For the Silva family, he remained a steady source of strength, reliability, and integrity.
Alfred’s athletic talent marked his early life. As a student athlete of Jefferson High School, he was the lead scorer in football and baseball and was named an All-District player. He attended St. Edwards University in Austin under a baseball scholarship and walked-on to the Texas Western College, now the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), baseball team in 1964. He began his coaching career in 1969 and dedicated 43 years of his life to teaching and coaching for various El Paso schools, including 17 years as the baseball coach and 10 years as the softball coach at Bowie High School. In 2000, he was inducted into the El Paso Baseball Hall of Fame.
Alfred will be remembered as many things: a hero, coach, brother, husband, uncle, godfather, grandpa, compa, friend, mentor, home run king, Mexican Viking, Mr. Silva, the player who hit the others so hard every football game, the man who built beautiful baseball and softball fields, the guy who cut everyone’s grass. The list is endless.
But his most treasured title was Father. Through his example, Alfred instilled the value of compassion, honesty, empathy, and kindness to his daughter Endi Silva and son David Frescas. His every day was dedicated to ensuring that his daughter was very much loved. Their bond will know no end.
To everyone who had the great fortune of knowing him, and to all who were ever in a huddle, sideline, or classroom with him, may you keep him in your hearts and minds as he is now resting in victory in his forever field of dreams.
The Silva family would like to thank the nurses and caregivers from Three Oaks Hospice, Laura Avila and the staff from Caring Companions. We would also like to thank all our friends and extended family for their ongoing support.
Alfred is survived by his spouse, Connie Frescas; his daughters Endi Silva and Tisha Baltao, son David Frescas, sisters Florence "Tati" Villareal and Barbara Espalin, brothers George and Chuck Silva. Alfred also leaves behind three grandchildren and his beloved cat, Koba.
