Mom was born June 26, 1927 in El Paso, Texas, where she was raised by her late parents, Guillermina and Henry B. Madrid. She was an only child. In 1947, she married our late father, Jimmy Hernandez. They were married 40 years, until his death in 1987.
They are survived by their four children: James, Ronald (Leloise), Michael (Clara) and Leticia (Antoine); eight grandchildren: Vanessa, Ryan, Jessica, Kevin, Mike, Billie, Patrick and Clarissa; and eleven great--grandchildren: Kayla, Erika, Jacky, Siena, Noemie, Easton, Alicia Chiyoko, Violet, Grace James, Bella Ryan Keiko, and Benedict.
Mom attended and graduated from St. Joseph's Academy (now Loretto Academy) in 1945. She went on to obtain her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from Texas Western College (now UTEP), and her Master's Degree from the University of Texas at El Paso.
Our Mom was passionate about education and had a long and rewarding career.
She was a teacher with the El Paso Independent School District for 35 years, teaching at Burleson Elementary School, Henderson Middle School, El Paso High School and, lastly, Jefferson High School, where she was the Vocational Adjustment Coordinator.
Mom was very active and committed to her community, her church, and her professional field. She was a past president of the American Association of University Women; she was a member of the El Paso Alumni Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; she was a past president of the Altar Society of Saint Joseph's Catholic Church; she was an active member of LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens); she was active with the El Paso Women's Club, and the El Paso Ballet Guild; and she was instrumental in the creation of Grandparents' Day at St. Joseph's Catholic School.
