On Thursday, December 2, 2021, an Angel on earth left us to soar to her rightful place in heaven to join her beloved Francisco (Kiko), her husband of 65 years. She is also reuniting with her mother, Maria Blasa Vazquez and her sisters, Cande (Candelaria) and Licha (Blasa Alicia) and brother Chito (Gabriel) and her son Victor Manuel.
A woman of Catholic faith who always thought of the well-being of others before her own, at 97 years of age, she awaited her homecoming peacefully, content that she had fulfilled her life’s mission, surrounded by family and friends that she had touched in some way throughout her very memorable life.
She was born in 1924 to Gabriel García Azcárate and María Blasa Vazquez. On her father’s side, both of her grandparents had a long history of wealth and prestige, primarily derived from Spanish Land Grants and military service to the Spanish Crown. Yet, she never sought claim to those prestiges and was forever humble.
Although she was of very strong character, her gentle smile and religious nature brought so much joy to her family, reminding them of how precious life is and the importance of maintaining good values and a relationship with God. Her children recall memories of her starting her daily routine of making coffee and oatmeal, then working on her garden and feeding her birds. Always singing! Later she would take a rest while watching the news and her telenovelas. Sunday was devoted to attending Mass. At Easter time, she would make cascarones for her children and to sell to the public. She loved playing her harmonica and was even honored to play for the Mayor of El Paso at the San Juan Senior Center.
But her favorite part of the day was when family called or visited…that always put a smile on her face.
She is survived by her devoted children Betty (Bea); Adela; Jesus, Jr., spouse Martha; Germán, spouse Angie; Paul, spouse Ofelia; David, spouse Ninfa; Walterio, spouse Yocasta; and Alice, spouse Frank. Also surviving are her 18 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
May her spirit soar and her bright light join the heavens watching over us!
