

Junia L. Polk was peacefully called home to our Lord and Savior on Sunday, April 9, 2012 at the age of 90. He was born on February 25, 1922 in Sacul, Texas to parents Hezekiah and Oma Price Polk, who preceded him in death. He was an only child. His name Junia comes from the Bible (Romans 16:7) He faithfully served his country for over 30 years with integrity and honor in the U.S. Army with service in 3 countries Germany, Japan and Korea. His stateside duties included Fort Benning, Georgia; Fort Jackson, South Carolina; Fort Belvior, Virginia; Fort Manmouth, New Jerseyl and Fort Huachucha, Arizona before retiring at Ft. Bliss, Texas. His Christian walk began when he united with Mount Zion Baptist Church in Columbia, South Carolina. By Christian experience he came to Unity Missionary Baptist Church in 1980 where he went on to serve as a deacon for over 20 years. After retirement he worked for Purolator Armored Car and as a television repairman. He reached out to many cities across the country as a Ham Operator K5MZT and belonged to the area chapter 64 QCWA for over 25 years. He was a Pride of the West #53 Rio Grande Consistory #24. He served his community and loved serving the Lord under the teachings of Pastor O.I. Kirk. His favorite songs were, “The Lord Is My Light and My Salvation” (Psalms 27), “This May Be the Last Time”, and “Going Up To Yonder”. He leaves to mourn his wife Maherley of 67 years, his sons James of Woodland Hills, California; Eric of El Paso and daughter Denise also of El Paso. Junia will be lovingly remembered by his 4 grandchildren, Antares, Kristy, Lauren, Shawnson and great grandchildren, Ymari, Laylah, Tamia of Ramstien, Germany and Kendyll of Arlington, Texas and son-in-law, Jose Torres. He is also survived by his cousins Dorothy Collins of San Antonio, Texas; William Hunter of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; George and Betty Perry of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; James and Joyce Lee of Waldorf, Maryland; Leonard and Carmen Lee of Neptune, New Jersey; Robert Lee of Los Angeles, California and numerous other cousins; nieces, nephews and friends of Steelton, Pennsylvania, His family and friends are brokenhearted at his passing, yet rejoice in the end of his pain and the beginning of his eternal life with his Lord and Savior. Family and friends are invited to a viewing at Martin Funeral Home, 3839 Montana Ave. ,Sunday, April 15th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. A homegoing service will be held at Unity Missionary Baptist Church at 4601 Maxwell Ave. on Monday, April 16th ¬at 12 Noon with Interment at 2 p.m. in Fort Bliss National Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
