Manny was born on April 30, 1932 to Margarita Venegas and Manuel
Santos Aguilar in El Paso, Texas.
He graduated from Cathedral High School in May 1950 and from Texas
Western College in August 1958. This was after attending college at Ft
Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. Aggie completed his post college
Work in administration at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas and
Santa Clara University, Santa Clara, California.
Manny was a veteran of the US Navy (1951-1955) where he was stationed in
San Diego, California and assigned to the USS Kearsarge. During his time
In the navy, he was awarded the China Service Medal as well as the
National Defense Service Medal.
He married Ramona Alicia Montelongo on 25 August 1957 and they had
three children, Rene Xavier, Ramon Victor, Richard Patrick.
Manny was a true educator in every sense of the word. He impacted many
People, young and old, throughout his entire life. From his first job at
Cathedral High School, to the Job Corps, the city of El Paso, Canutillo
ISD, Gadsden ISD, Anthony ISD and back to his Cathedral roots.
He even had the opportunity to coach semi-pro football with the El Paso
Matadors in the mid 1970’s.
After his retirement, there was no slowing down for Coach Aggie (Pops).
He immediately took on teaching and coaching jobs with the El Paso
Independent School District, where he spent time teaching in the
Alternative classroom as well as teaching social studies. In addition to
His teaching duties, he coached football and track at Andress High
School and Jefferson High School.
Manny also spent a number of years coaching in the Greater El Paso
Football Showcase.
Manny is survived by his wife, Mona, of 60 years, sons, Rene (Yolanda),
Ramon (Lucina+) and Richard, grandchildren, Nickole (Juan), Rene, Marisa,
Ray and Aliana. He is also survived by his sister, Cecilia Spade.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Margarita, father, Manuel,
brothers, Ulysses and Alejandro (Cano) and his daughter-In-Law, Lucina.
Visitation will be Thursday 25 January, from 6 pm to 9 pm, with the rosary
At 7 pm. Mass will be Friday 26 January, at 9:30 am. Both services will be
Held at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, with Fr. Richard Sotelo presiding.
Interment will follow the mass at ft. Bliss National Cemetery.
He was blessed to have had so many people that cared for him. The family
Would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Jesus Gomez, dr. Ruben
Ramirez, Jan & Ed Garza, Envision Hospice and RIO GRANDE HOME HEALTH.
Manny has requested that any memorials or donations be made to St.
Luke’s Catholic Church or Cathedral High School.
