Janis Mae Lindsay

Estes Park resident Janis Mae “Jan” Lindsay, beloved wife, mother, and friend, died December 24, 2018 in Loveland, CO. Janis Mae White was born, raised, graduated from high school, and married in Kansas. She completed two years of her college education at Colorado Women’s College (CWC) in Denver, CO, and two years at Kansas State University (K State) in Manhatten, KS, earning an undergraduate degree in Home Economics. She was a proud and loyal member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority at K State, and of PEO in her later Denver years. Jan taught junior high Home Economics for several years, but elected to concentrate on being a wonderful wife and mother, rather than pursuing a full time career as a teacher. She excelled at playing the marimba, a talent she demonstrated to win the titles of Miss CWC and Miss K State in the late 1950s. She was the first runner up in the 1959 Miss Kansas Pageant. Jan had the opportunity to showcase her marimba talents for a variety of audiences including a performance for President and Mrs. Eisenhower when Ike was hospitalized in Denver in the late 1950s. She played “Home on the Range” for Ike, who was from Kansas, and “Ave Maria” for Mamie. Jan excelled as a junior high girls Home Economics teacher, particularly with students that may have been behind academically. She received high praise from mothers whose daughters really enjoyed, as well as responded to, her teaching style and methods. She loved making friends. Jan was a friend to a wide range of people. She had a special talent for learning the needs and interests of the people around her and made a genuine effort to respond in kind. Few could resist her efforts to become their friend. Most importantly, Jan concentrated on being the best wife and mother she could be. It was in these endeavors, that she succeeded beyond belief. Jan is preceded in death by her parents Hugh and Gladys White, and by her brother and sister David and Sharon White. She is survived by her husband of 58 years Pete Lindsay, by her brother Myron White, by her children Mark Lindsay and Charlotte Maybury, and by her grandchildren Melody and Christopher Lindsay. Remembrances and open houses in honor of Jan’s life will be held Sunday, January 13, 2019 at the Lindsay’s home in Estes Park at 931 Old Ranger Drive from 2:00pm – 4:00pm; and on Sunday, January 20, 2019 at Charlotte’s home in Golden at 1151 Ninth Street from 3:00pm – 6:00pm.
