Steve was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on July 15, 1953, to Merlyn and Dorothea LaMont. Raised in St. Louis Park, MN, Steve was a gifted scholar and athlete. He played football, soccer and hockey, and went on to compete in the state skiing championships, beginning a lifelong passion for downhill skiing.
After graduating high school, Steve attended the University of Minnesota before eventually moving to Rhode Island to continue his involvement with the Earth Shoe Company.
In August 1987, Steve decided to head west and settled briefly in Boulder, CO. Finding the city a little too busy for his taste, he took a day trip into the mountains. As he rounded a corner and caught his first glimpse of Estes Park, he instantly knew he had found his forever home — and in his own words, “the rest is history.”
Steve went on to spend nearly four decades in Estes Park, becoming a familiar and beloved presence in the community. Over the years, he pursued a variety of entrepreneurial ventures, including the founding of Buckwheat’s Natural Foods and Buckwheat Organic Market. He was also well known for roasting nuts at local festivals, where he enjoyed connecting with others and sharing in the community he loved.
Steve had a deep appreciation for the natural beauty of Estes Park and the people who called it home. He spent countless hours outdoors, built lasting friendships, and became somewhat of a local icon. He also gave back to the community he loved and was especially fond of volunteering with Estes Park Bright Christmas.
Above all, Steve’s greatest happiness came from his family. In Estes Park, he raised the love and joy of his life, his daughter Marrianna. In recent years, he cherished time spent with Marrianna, her husband Ayden, and his two granddaughters, Karsyn and Kinsley.
Steve was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his daughter Marrianna (Ayden) Parks, granddaughters Karsyn and Kinsley, sister Terri (Roger) Bjork, brother Robert (Cindy) LaMont, niece Amanda (Stephen) Anderson, great nephew Hayes, and many other beloved family and friends. He will be deeply missed by them and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, June 7th from 1:00 to 4:00 PM in Estes Park at Stanley Park, Bluebird Pavilion. Friends and family are encouraged to drop by anytime and bring instruments, memories, and stories as we gather to celebrate Steve with music, laughter, and love.
