Joseph Yocum, 81, of Evansville, died Monday, October 8, 2012 at Select Specialty Hospital. He was born December 28, 1930 in Gary, IN to Iona (Heironimus) Yocum and Dr. Paul Stone Yocum. From the age of 10 through high school he attended Staunton Military Academy in Staunton, Va. Upon graduation he enlisted in the U.S. army, serving during the Korean War from 1950-1953. He received his undergraduate degree at I.U. in Bloomington, where he also earned a Master's Degree in History in 1959 and a Law Degree in 1962. Joseph Yocum, 81, of Evansville, died Monday, October 8, 2012 at Select Specialty Hospital. He was born December 28, 1930 in Gary, IN to Iona (Heironimus) Yocum and Dr. Paul Stone Yocum. From the age of 10 through high school he attended Staunton Military Academy in Staunton, Va. Upon graduation he enlisted in the U.S. army, serving during the Korean War from 1950-1953. He received his undergraduate degree at I.U. in Bloomington, where he also earned a Master's Degree in History in 1959 and a Law Degree in 1962.
He was married in 1960 to Marlene (Muth) Yocum and they had two sons, Marc Stephen Yocum, who predeceased him and Eric Joseph Yocum who is married to Tracy Ann Wiseman. He has one granddaughter, Elizabeth Jade Yocum. He was predeceased by his parents, his twin sister, Judy Ann (Koewler) Cornett, his brother, Dr. Paul Stone Yocum, Jr. and his sister-in-law, Deborah (Dorman) Yocum. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Adrienne Boyd (Jim) and Michelle, all of Evansville and brothers-in-law, Randy Much of Evansville and Hal S. Lobree of Miami, FL and many loving nieces and nephews.
After graduation from Law School, he practiced law in Knox, IN, where he also served as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney. In 1963 his family moved to Evansville where he spent the next fifteen years with the firm of Kahn, Dees, Donovan & Kahn. In 1978 he opened his own law office in the Hulman Building where he was joined in the practice by his son, Eric, in 1987. From 1996 until his retirement, his office was in the former Hilliard Lyons Building. His practice spanned more than 45 years. He was always interested in the intellectual side of law and helped many young lawyers "find their way around the courthouse and the law library". He also did much pro bono work, though he never spoke of it.
His interests included many sports, having run track in high school and played baseball, football and especially basketball in high school. He was a fine ice skater and an excellent swimmer, having spent summers with his family in northeastern Indiana at Lake James. In later years he enjoyed Karate as a family activity and music, classic movies and dining out. He was a very loving husband and father who will be remembered, missed and loved forever by his family.

Visitation: Thursday, October 11th from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Alexander West Chapel, 2100 W. Illinois Street. Burial with graveside military services: Friday, October 12th at 2:00 PM at Alexander Memorial Park Cemetery, 2200 Mesker Park Drive or in the mausoleum chapel in case of rain.
