Richard Swonder

Richard was born in Evansville, Indiana on March 16, 1936 to the late Ruple and Naomi (Cheney) Swonder. He served in the United States Marine Corps and retired from Schultheis Insurance after many years of service. He was President of Swonder Insurance from 1982-1992 and Vice President of Swonder Mattress Company. Richard was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the Lessing Lodge, Shriners, Hadi Shrine Funsters, the VFW and the AmVets. He was the founding member of C-mens and member of Tri State Painting Golf League at Thunderbolt Pass for 35 years. Richard was president of PIA (Professional Insurance Agents), member of Owls Nest 30, Civitan and the Marine Corp League. He loved spending time with his family especially his grandchildren and will be deeply missed by family and friends.

Richard is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sue (Mercer) Swonder of Evansville, IN; daughter, Lori Barry of Alden, MI; brother, Randy Swonder (Linda) of Columbus, IN; granddaughter, Peyton Swonder; great-grandchildren, Emma and Greyson; several nieces; nephews; and great nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by a daughter, Hollie Swonder in 1981; his parents; and siblings, Judith Swonder in infancy and Roger Cheney Swonder.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 16, 2017 at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 308 N. First Ave., Evansville, IN 47710 with Pastor Culver officiating. Entombment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery where the Retired Veterans Memorial Club will conduct military rites.

Friends may visit from 12:00 Noon until 6:00 PM on Sunday, October 15, 2017 at Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Ave., Evansville, IN 47711 where there will be a Marine Corp walk through at 5:00 PM and a Shriner walk through at 5:45 PM followed by a Masonic service.

Friends may also visit from 10:00 AM until service time on Monday, October 16, 2017 at the church.
