Dina Lynn Barela Hilderbrand Peterson, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully at home in Everett, Washington on July 3, 2025, at the age of 63, after a courageous battle with stage IV metastatic breast cancer. She was lovingly cared for by her husband, Joe, throughout her final chapter.
Dina was born on May 9, 1962, at Patrick Air Force Base in Florida to Robert Barela and Lola Kay Caine. Dina was later adopted by David Hilderbrand, who was part of her life during her early years. She spent her childhood in Alaska, and cherished the time she spent with her grandparents in Hawaii. A lifelong learner and teacher at heart, Dina attended Rick’s College and BYU-Hawaii, beginning her studies in education.
She married the love of her life, Leonard “Joe” Peterson on May 28th, 1982 , and together they raised their family in Everett, which has been their home for the past 33 years. Dina dedicated over two decades to supporting students as a paraeducator in the Mukilteo School District, where she found joy and purpose working with middle schoolers. She also served her community as PTA president, on the F.U.N committee; spearheading the annual craft fair and volunteered with her children’s sports teams.
Creative, joyful, and full of heart, Dina found deep fulfillment in both making and giving. She poured her talents into sewing, tole painting, woodworking, and turning her home into a festive haven for every holiday. Music was one of her greatest joys—she played the piano, sang with warmth and spirit, and was often found dancing and singing through the house to everything from classic rock to primary songs. A true dancing queen, she brought light and laughter wherever she moved. One of her favorite traditions was playing Santa for families in need, a reflection of her generous and playful soul. A devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Dina served faithfully in many callings—her most cherished memories came from Girls Camp and planning Relief Society activities, where her creativity and love for others truly shined.
She was a woman of deep compassion, humor, and understanding—always willing to listen and always ready with a laugh. A proud sci-fi fan, she had a special love for Star Trek. But above all else, Dina’s greatest joy was her family. She adored her three daughters and was immensely proud of each of her grandchildren.
Dina is survived by her husband of 43 years, Joe Peterson; her daughters Kalei (Ryan), Erin (Mosese), and Shannon; and her grandchildren Tyler, Ryleigh, Tristan, Mason, Brayden, Kash, and Parker. She is also survived by her siblings Ann Barela Hilderbrand Rich, Jared Hilderbrand, Judy Barela Riel, and Chris Barela. Parents Robert and Carla Barela
She was joyfully reunited in heaven with her mother, Kay, who surely greeted her with open arms.
Her life was a living example of one of her favorite quotes:
“If we could look into each other’s hearts and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care.” – Marvin J. Ashton
A celebration of Dina’s life will be held on August 23 from 12–4 PM at the Harbour Pointe Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints 11001 Harbour Pointe Blvd, Mukilteo WA 98275. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to The Shoe Wall for students at Explorer Middle School in her memory.
Her ashes will be spread at a later date in a place special to the family.
