Loa Jeannine Johnson Henderson, age 91, passed away peacefully in her sleep on 16 November 2024 surrounded by her family. Loa was born 5 October 1933 in American Falls, Idaho to William Johnson and Erminnie Richardson, the second of five children, with older brother Bernie Johnson (Eva Mae), younger brother Benjamin Levi (died in infancy), and two younger sisters: Luanne (Derrell) Savage and Polly (Howard) Beck.
Loa participated in drama throughout her school years, playing many lead roles. She proudly played the clarinet in her high school marching and pep bands in American Falls, Idaho where she graduated in 1952.
After graduation, she was working as a secretary at an army depot when her friends set her up with a mutual friend, Lester (“Les”) Henderson, who was then serving in Korea as a paratrooper. Loa and Les wrote many letters while he was deployed, and their correspondence grew to a romance. They were married on 12 February 1954 in the Idaho Falls temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Loa and Les had five daughters: Laura (Matt) Hardy, Lisa (Layton) Anderson, Lynell (Mark) Nielson, Lani Lynch, and LeAnne (Chris) Bresciano. Loa was grandmother to 17 grandchildren and 38 great grandchildren.
Loa was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and set an example of faith and service throughout her life. As a newlywed, she served with her husband on a church mission to Florida. Throughout her life she served in a variety of Relief Society and Young Women’s leadership positions. Later, she and Les worked closely with Southeast Asian refugees in the Everett, WA area whom they came to love dearly. For four years, Loa taught youth early morning seminary. She held many church callings and was an especial champion of women and womens’ roles.
An excellent teacher and storyteller, Loa also had an exceptional memory for music. She captivated her children and grandchildren with stories, songs, cheers and games. Loa shared her love for God, life, and beauty with her children, grandchildren, and all who knew her.
