We are deeply saddened to announce that Rolf Heinz Kradenpoth passed away unexpectedly on January 27, 2025 at the age of 84 in his Marysville, Washington home. His encyclopedic knowledge of plants and rocks, love of nature and deep devotion to his family will be sorely missed.
Rolf was born on July 1, 1940 in Insterburg, Germany. He was the eldest of eight children. From an early age, Rolf loved animals and nature. Some of his most cherished childhood memories included playing with hedgehogs and climbing trees.
Rolf’s journey brought him with his family to Oregon in 1956. He immediately fell in love with American culture, especially beautiful cars, Elvis records and small delights like ketchup.
After graduating from school, Rolf began a lifelong passion of working with plants and trees. His family fondly remembers his endless knowledge of all things related to gardening.
Rolf also loved rockhounding and was grateful for the close friendships he formed around his hobby. Many happy memories involved close family members accompanying him on trips to find rare treasures from the earth.
Rolf is remembered for his deep love of family. He was outgoing with strangers and had a truly singular sense of humor. We will miss his optimism, his youthful spirit and his gentleness.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Wendy; his daughter, Jennifer; his sons, Brian, Mike, Justin and Jeff and grandchildren.
