Byron leaves a legacy of love and integrity with his family and those who knew him. He has left behind beautiful memories of a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. We are grateful for each day that we shared in his smiles and laughed along with his hearty laughs. Our lives were enriched and our hearts filled by each moment and memory shared with Byron.
Byron “Bud” Francis Hovis was born on May 13 in Des Arc, Missouri. Bud was the youngest of four brothers and four sisters born to Alfred Benton and Lola Mae. After losing his mother at hardly two years of age, he was given the nickname “Bud” by his father. Byron and Wanda met at a small Baptist church in Bloomfield, Missouri, thus beginning their courtship. It was during this time, at sixteen years of age, that they fell in love. They married on April 23 in Dexter, Missouri in a beautiful service that marked the beginning of a life together, serving their Lord, their community, their family, and most of all, each other.
As many of you know, Byron and Wanda loved to see the world. Their journey was sprinkled with travel and adventure; so much so that they visited over 40 countries including the entire United States, much of it by RV. The places that Bud and Wanda called home included Indiana, Missouri, Arizona and ultimately, California, where they happily resided for well over 60 years.
Bud always worked hard to provide for his family, his community, and those whom he loved. He began his career at Goodyear Aircraft, and over the years his work ethic led him to success in construction, contracting, and diversity in investments. The most significant legacy that Byron leaves behind is his family: children Byron and Faye and their spouses Melinda and David, his seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; 18 beloved children in all.
To those who revered Bud as a life friend, you know how much he loved golfing with you, enjoying Jeeping adventures perhaps, or visiting with you in Palm Springs. For some, you'll warmly recall dining with Byron at restaurants, playing games, telling stories, and sharing in his spirited sense of humor. Byron never ran out of engaging stories, funny anecdotes, or clever ways to bring those around him closer. It’s part of what made Byron special: he was a people-person, warm and inviting, and always loving towards those around him.
Byron also cared deeply for his church family. Through the years, he supported missions, served on church boards, and worked with the youth ministry. Byron donated his time and energy to various church projects. He was a man of God, serving the Lord tirelessly, praying for those whom he loved and nurturing his faith in his daily walk through life.
Faithful, Loving, and Kind; these three words sum up Byron well. He led a purposeful and meaningful, long and fulfilling life; one that blessed each of us profoundly, enriching all of us, in a lasting and impactful way.
Byron and Wanda were best friends and partners. Their lives were full of adventure, fun, and dedication to God. They were the love of each other lives.
We will miss Byron more than words can express.
