Helen Marie Barrett

home on May 30, 2025. Helen was married to Dr. Thomas George Barrett, DDS for 59 years

and is survived by her sister Geraldine Busch, her children Neil, Roberta, Brian, and Dan,

and her grandchildren Shaun, Shannon Cody, Adam, Zach, and Sofia.

Helen graduated from Holy Angels Academy in 1946 and enjoyed life-long friendships with

several classmates. She married Tom Barrett in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and moved to

Twenty-Nine Palms, California where she lived with Tom, a Lieutenant in the Navy, and

gave birth to her first child Dan. The family relocated to Green Bay, Wisconsin where Tom

established a dental practice. They enjoyed family, friends (Helen often referred to herself

as a “people person”) as well as skiing and fishing. In 1966 the family returned to California

and established a home in Sacramento.

As an avid Scrabble player and crossword puzzle solver, Helen was a strong believer in the

importance of language and education. Through the local library, she mentored a student

who, over a three year period, learned to read for the first time in his life. Her passion as a

wordsmith rubbed off on her children, all successful students and avid readers.

Helen was a homemaker throughout her adult life, enjoyed cooking and was the creator of

many memorable holiday meals, with wild rice and potato salads being family favorites.

She and Tom (on the BBQ) instilled a love for cooking in their children, all skilled cooks

themselves so the legacy lives on.

A service will be held on Thursday, June 26 at 10:00 am at Mt. Vernon Cemetery
