We knew Joann through our friendship with Jeff.  We were always impressed with her curiosity about people and concern for their welfare.  Whenever we talked with her,  we appreciated how her intelligence and passion for social justice were such central features of who she was.

We hope that fond memories of Joann will be a comfort to Jeff, Mary, Chris and her grandchildren.

Mom, it's been my greatest honor to have you in my life for sixty-six years. As a young child you always seemed to find time to read to me in the early evening. I also cherish the memories  of laughter with you sitting around the family room  and going on family trips to the coast. Because  of you I've always had a love of reading. Especially when you spent time on your old fashioned typewriter; typing out poetry for me. Love you forever

You are a strong childhood memory. Mary and I have been friends for 60 years and you were always a steady person throughout the years. Your house was a museum to me - teapots, quilts, newspaper articles, and pictures that your grandkids had drawn. Loved spending time at your house and all the slumber parties we had there.
You were a woman of courage, doing your own thing and educating others on Women's rights and Women's history.  You did what a lot of women wouldn't have had the courage to do.  Thank you for letting me be a part of your life and so thankful I was able to see you during the last few weeks of your life! You will definitely be missed. Glad you are now at peace.

My mother my friend 😢it’s been two weeks since you went into the “great unknown” as you answered when I asked where do you think we go. It’s a shock to realize I’ll never be able to share my day with you or have any more conversations or laughs together. Even as your memory got worse we were able to have a few laughs. You taught me the love of books at a young age.  We were different in a lot of ways but similar in others. Thank you for making me feel comfortable every time I came to visit. It was always cozy. When we were young, you  were the quiet strength to our father’s loud presence. We did have fun as a family with laughter, travels and simple family traditions. You will be with me in my heart and memories everyday. Love you forever 😢❤️

A gentle rest for a gentle soul. My sweet Grandmother, so beautiful and wise. A steadfast example of beauty and grace in a world full of insincerity. Your love wrapped around me like a quilt, warm, calm. The softness of your voice reading to me at night while I study your hands holding my favorite Dr. Seuss book. Reading the newspaper, squinting to keep your glasses up while having our morning oatmeal. Feeling so proud watching you teach. You were the best Grandma I could ever wish for, always kind and generous setting a beautiful example for the future.

Hey my precious cousins,  Jack, Debbie and myself are all so sorry to hear about your mom’s passing.  Aunt Joanne was a real sweet and dear person.  A mother is a major loss and never, ever forgotten.  Our hearts go out to you.   Love, Cousin Cathee.

My 5th birthday will always be one of my favorites. I remember going to Grandma Joan’s house, her having a Cars the movie themed cake for me. She knew I would love it and she was right! Top 5 childhood memories easily.

I’m already missing you a lot, you were always such a kind and genuine person, the most genuine person I’ve ever met, no matter what you were always you. I’ll never forget visiting you, you always had such a comforting and warm presence, and you were patient and listened, even when I was a little kid, and you inspired me to always try my absolute hardest. Your humor and light hearted attitude in our conversations always made me smile, you were such an incredible and unique person, and I aspire to be like you. I love you, and I hope you are in peace now.

Yes, mom was a very strong woman, she changed her name went back to school,and got involved in the feminist movement to help other women, and teach.
A while back, I asked Mom what was her greatest thing she did and she said having us three kids.
Mom is now at peace in heaven with Grandma, her brother and her father. Until one day we all meet again, miss her and love her forever. ❤️🌹🌻🌌

Here is to smell of chalk, blackboards and books as I watched in awe as you taught as a professor... I was your first great grandson , I just wanted to tell you how much I love you and how I miss you. I miss going over to your house as a little kid and playing around in the yard and playing in grandma Mary’s Toyota Echo, and going to the cheese cake factory when I would visit, I also miss playing with that vacuum you let me use because I for some reason had a fixation on vacuums when I was little. And that McDonald’s play set that was passed down from my mom and Aunt that me and Isaiah always had fun playing with. I’ll never forget how kind you always were grandma ! I always felt welcomed and comfortable in your home. I love love love you.
