Maurice was born in Newton, Iowa, where he attended Newton High School. Musically talented, he played the clarinet, trumpet and the tuba in the high school band. At the age of 19 he enlisted in the Army Air Forces, the precursor to the United States Air Force, which began his lifelong career and love of flying. He retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel.
With his military career beginning in WWII, piloting a B-24 Bomber, Maurice was a skilled pilot and instructor until he retired after 28 years of service to his country. He flew many planes while in the Air Force, and he would often tell you that his favorite was the C-130 Hercules, which he began flying in 1958. His service to his country took him many places, and he served in several wars. He was the recipient of many awards and commendations, and well deserved they were for the honorable life he led.
Everyone who knew Maurice knew what a gracious man he was, as well as a wonderful family man and friend. After years of flying commercially, he indulged in his favorite pastime of playing golf, a game in which he excelled and played until his 90th birthday. Quite a good poker player too, Maurice enjoyed going to the local card room until a few months before he passed.
Maurice will be remembered as a kind and gentle soul who was loved by many. He leaves behind a wife and a host of family and friends that will never forget him. He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings and his stepdaughter.
We will never forget you.
