Roberto had a special purpose in this life!!
As a young child, Roberto was stricken with Rheumatic Heart disease which caused much suffering and pain, but he and his family embraced that Cross and continued to be Thankful for all of their Blessings. Little did we know that our God would also transform that same Heart to be the most loving and serving to all he met along his journey. Roberto was well known, as he had many friends in Hebbronville. On Saturday Evenings and on Sundays, you could always find him at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church serving as an usher. He would greet you with his unique gift of serving and made sure that you had one of the Church bulletins. He also assisted and traveled throughout the Hebbronville community with the many Priests and Franciscan Brothers to serve the sick and homebound, as well traveled to Mexico on an annual basis to deliver boxes of food, clothes, and small furniture that he had collected throughout the year to give to the poor and needy. He boxed the items, asked for a family member to drive him to Laredo and then catch the bus to Mexico. What a Beautiful Heart, our Roberto!
He was also a proud member of the Mutualistas! He loved to visit his many friends and almost every morning he would walk to Arturo’s Bakery, COD café and later to Dairy Queen to meet and catch up with all of the happenings of Hebbronville. Seeing him walking the streets of Hebbronville to all of his destinations, always brought smiles throughout the Hebbronville community. Easter and Christmas were two of his favorite holidays. Months before the Easter Season, he would help his mother, Elodia prepare by cutting all types of paper to make confetti and would help Arturo at the bakery and in return had access to the egg shells to make the famous Chavez cascarones! Christmas was also very special to Roberto and his family. I’m sure many can remember Roberto dressing up as Santa Claus and sitting outside his house handing out bags filled with fruit and candy to all. He would often say that the giving of bags filled with fruit and candy was in appreciation to the wonderful community of Hebbronville who always gave so much to him and his parents at the Chavez Fruit Store. He continued his gift giving to his many special friends during Christmas. During his daily walks, he would pick-up, crush, and bag aluminum cans scattered through the streets and sell them to raise money to buy the Christmas gifts for his special friends. Many of you at one time or another received a Christmas gift from Roberto! Thinking and Giving to others before himself. What a Beautiful Heart, our Roberto!
Hebbronville loved our Roberto as well as all of his family! We take comfort knowing that our faith in the promises of God, our Roberto is rejoicing in Heaven with his wonderful parents, family and friends who have gone to be with the Lord! When you pray the St. Francis of Assisi prayer: “Lord make me an instrument of Your Peace”, remember our Roberto because throughout his life, he was God’s instrument to all of us! Peace and Joy to our Roberto!!
We would like to thank the staff at Meridian Care of Hebbronville, Nurses on Wheels Home Health and the countless of Roberto’s friends for all of the love, care and support they showed Roberto throughout his life! May God’s Blessings be with all of you always!
