OBITUARY

Andrew Dougherty

1 January, 19819 July, 2019
At 18, Hamid Foladiyan found his way to Fort Wayne, seeking refuge from the death of his parents, 2 sisters and 2 brothers- his entire family- in his homeland of Afghanistan. He came with nothing but hope and determination, qualities shared with those who choose this country for its promise of the American dream. Hamid’s drive and persistence impressed all he encountered, including his informal adoptive American parents, whom he met shortly after his arrival to the U.S. Hamid was friendly and outgoing, but serious about his goals for his new life. He quickly became an integral part of the Fort Wayne family, the extended Indiana Afghan family, and the American family. He worked hard, saved money, and studied diligently, earning his citizenship at the earliest opportunity, in 2005. At that time, he chose his American name, Andrew Dougherty, in honor of his new family. He bought a home, he married, and he proudly served with the U.S. military as an interpreter from 2011-2013. Andrew was a devoted father to his daughters, working hard to give them the education and opportunities he had missed as a child. He graduated with his GED in June 2012 and from Ivy Tech in 2018 as an HVAC technician. He was proud of his education, but true to his nature he had bigger plans, so he moved to Texas in August 2018 hoping to start his own HVAC business. Although his journey is over, his legacy of generosity, determination and achievement will remain with all of those who knew and loved him. He is missed and survived by his wife, Haida Nazir Dougherty, his precious daughters, Sara, 10, and Meaghan, 7, his parents, Terry and Margie Dougherty, his brother, Brian Shultz, and his sisters, Monica Heltz and Jeanne Rohrs.
