

Herbert Bernard Burkhart, 94, of Fort Wayne passed away on Thursday, October 13, 2022. He was born on March 25, 1928 in Smith, Kentucky, a son of the late Herbert S. and Nancy (Ledford) Burkhart. At 18, he volunteered to serve in the U.S. Army. After training at Fort Meade and Camp Kilmer, he was stationed at Schofield Barracks in Oahu, Hawaii. He worked for Allen County Motors and International Harvester from which he retired in 1983. He was a member at Liberty Mills Church of the Nazarene for 63 years. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, raising a garden, canning, woodworking with his brother, and capturing memories of his loved ones with his camera. He was a captivating storyteller and a man of strong faith. Surviving family include his children, Lana Burkhart, David (Michelle) Burkhart, and Tim (Wendi) Burkhart; 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren; and brother, James W. Burkhart. He was preceded in passing by his parents and his wife of 68 years, Betty (Bond) Burkhart; and a great grandson, Joshua Lee Burkhart II. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 20, 2022 at Liberty Mills Church of the Nazarene, 10621 Liberty Mills Road, Fort Wayne with visitation one hour prior. Visitation will also be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 19, 2022 at Hockemeyer & Miller Funeral Home, 6131 St. Joe Road, Fort Wayne.
