Obituary of Mel Jones
As a youth Mel Jones resided in Chicago’s Westside where he cultivated his lifelong devotion to the Chicago Bears and Cubs sports teams. He later moved to Michigan City, IN where he married Pam Arnold-Jones in 1993. In Michigan City he worked as a caregiver of special needs young adults and a chef. He was known for his gregarious personality, infectious laugh, kindness, love of dogs (he always carried treats in his pockets), talent for cooking BBQ, gardening, his skills as a musician, and a consistent commitment to community service through his church and numerous outreach programs. He loved painting and often used his classmates as "tasters" for the dinners he made for Wednesday nights at his church. He rarely shared his recipes, much to the chagrin of all who enjoyed his fantastic creations. Mel was a percussionist having played in bands in Chicago and later in Ft. Wayne. His return to performing in recent years was a true joy for him. His bands included Lee Lewis and the All Stars, The Late Arrivals, The Sims Project, and The Kalderon’s. Mel attended broadcasting school and had a radio show on WIMS called “Mel in the Morning” where his striking voice could be heard across the airwaves. He will be greatly missed by his church family at First Wayne Street United Methodist Church in Ft. Wayne, IN. He leaves behind his companion of seven years, Kim Sedery, his cherished buddies, and band mates. To his family and extended family of dear friends, Mel is cherished for everything he shared through his love and kindness. We are all deeply saddened that he has passed and the cause of his death. He had excellent care at St. Joseph Hospital. Despite their best efforts, COVID-19 is not a kind disease and it ravaged his body until he could no longer fight. He now joins his beloved wife, Pam Arnold-Jones, their dog Max, cousin, Eli Martin, and his mother on the other side. We are left with an empty space, but also the magnificent gift of having Mel as part of our lives. To the Beat. 6-10-4. Church: First Wayne Street United Methodist Church, Ft. Wayne, IN Family: Cousin- Mary Kay Martin, Sister and Brother-in-Law: Susan & Steven Tracey, Niece- Leigh Tracey-Gaynair, Nephews- Matthew Tracey and Charles Tracey. Note: A celebration of life will be planned for a future date when gatherings are safe.
