 I had an even deeper pleasure of knowing him through Stephanie’s confidences and descriptions.  Stephanie is my true friend, my friend of the heart.  So for a long time, I mostly knew Chuck in this second way.  It was a way made of boasts disguised as complaints, and it was textured, and wide, and true. Oh how we laughed at the foibles of men, we women! But we knew we were talking love.   The reason is that the love between Stephanie and Chuck was as righteous as it was beautiful.  I got to see him and it at very close range, and so I want to bear witness, that this was something that should be sung, that should be known.  Maybe you can’t know, as I know, just how brilliant Stephanie is.  It’s an advantage, to be sure, but it makes her testy.  Not every man would be centered enough to revel in her gifts, to always treasure and appreciate them, to shrug off base comparison or rivalry and instead to cherish her every ability as if it showered him with glory.  He did.  He really, really, did.  I got to see it up close.  I got to know it over twenty years.  I saw the light in his eyes when she said or did any one of her million amazing things.  I saw the amused shrug when she was annoyed with him.  He knew and she knew and both deeply knew what love is, and how light these burdens are to it.
I will leave it to others to tell us of his loyalty to his children and his service to his family, of his upstanding businessman’s approach to making a living, of his fairness as an employer and the warmth he spread.  After all, there is so much more to say.
Here we are, bereft, but I will always treasure his mark in my life.  I wish I could thank him for his many gifts to me.  I want the world to know that this is no nithing loss.  This hurts for good reason.  Remember him as I do, engaged, philosophical, laughing at absurdity – it helps.
