Born Claire Bernice Aman, she was the first of 10 children raised by Madlyn (nee Foley) and Clarence Bernard Aman on a farm in Penfield, New York. Claire was intelligent, personable, outgoing, outspoken, funny, open-hearted and generous. But you can’t keep the girl down on the farm; soon she was at school in the big city, Rochester, where she often stayed with her beloved grandparents. From there she went on to LeMoyne College, the first in her family to go, where she acted in drama clubs, led a busy social life and got her degree in English with plans to be a teacher. Fate - and Art - intervened in that plan, and it wasn’t long before she was married with five children. Five births, that is, in a little more than six years. She was fiercely devoted to raising her children right.
Claire had an exceptional intelligence and irrepressible personality. She was strong and fearless, not easily intimidated, somewhat immune to social expectations, and was a free-thinker. She was a stalwart and loyal friend, particularly to those who most needed one. She had a powerful, beautiful voice and enjoyed singing in church and choirs. When you heard her singing, you knew everything was all right with the world.
When her children grew and left for college and work, she went back into the working world and for many years worked for the Social Security Administration. She loved to tell stories of the people she helped each day.
Throughout her life she never lost her keen sense of humor or her open-hearted and generous approach to the world.
She and her husband Art then enjoyed their retirement years, with a rich family life including frequent visits from their children and grandchildren. Only his death last year could separate them.
She was pre-deceased by her cherished husband of 65 years, Arthur Edward Florack. She was the beloved mother of Michele, James (Tracy) Florack, Brian (Becky) Florack. Daniel (Linda LePar) Florack, and Nanette (Michael) Farinholt; and beloved grandmother of ten: Joshua Florack, Erika Florack, Chrissy Florack, Ian Jenkins, Sarah Florack, Joy Farinholt, Georgia Jenkins, Hope Farinholt, Elliot Florack, and Katherine Florack. She is also survived by three sisters, Kate Wicks, Jean (Jerry) Tosch, Patricia Proulx, Eileen Aman, sister-in-law Connie Aman, and brothers James (Barbara) Aman, and George (Dahlia) Aman. She was pre-deceased by her parents, Clarence and Madlyn Aman, brothers Frank Aman and Robert Aman, and her sister Teresa Bonn.
All who knew her will miss her terribly.
A service will be held for Claire at 1:00pm on Saturday, June 14, 2025 at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The family will receive friends from 12:00pm until service time. Her ashes will ultimately be buried by the side of her husband Art in a combined ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, date yet to be determined.
