Obituary of John Walter Markevicz
John W. Markevicz (LCDR, U.S. Navy Ret.) died Saturday, January 19, 2019. He was born June 30, 1944 in New Haven, CT, son of Walter and Dorothy Markevicz. John graduated from Oklahoma University, Norman, OK; Naval Post Graduate School, Monterey, CA; and received his Ph.D. from George Washington University, Washington, D.C. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy for 24 years aboard destroyers and Ballistic Missile submarines. Upon retiring from the Navy, he spent fifteen years in the defense industry in the Dahlgren, VA area. The last seventeen years he was a professor at Defense Acquisition University, Ft. Belvoir, Virginia Campus, teaching Information Technology, Software Acquisition, Systems Engineering, and Science and Technology Management courses. John leaves his wife of 52 years, Christine; his three sons-of whom he was very proud-Brian of San Diego, Paul (Taylor) of San Diego, and Matthew of Plano, Texas; his adored grandsons, Alex, and Ryan; his three sisters, Helen Miazga, Barbara Ziontz, and Charlene Kicinski; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews; many very special friends from across the country; his Navy family; his Fredericksburg family; his DAU family; and all his shipmates. He was preceded in death by his brother Richard. A special thank you to the staff of Mary Washington Hospital, especially 4th floor north, for their care, thoughtfulness, and compassion during John’s illness. A Funeral Mass will take place at 10:30 am on Monday, January 27, 2020 at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fredericksburg. Burial with full military honors will be at 9:00 am on Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at Arlington National Cemetery. Please arrive to the administration building by 8:15 am, attendees over the age of 16 will need photo ID. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
