He was born in Columbus, Georgia on March 1, 1959, the son of Doris (Davey) and Harry (Jack) Zellmer. As the son of an army officer he lived in many different regions of this country - South, Southwest, West, Midwest - and overseas before his family settled in Virginia.
Mike was a long-time - and proud - 33-year associate of the City of Fredericksburg Public Works department. And he truly enjoyed his job, and the camaraderie and friendship of his coworkers. In 2020 he retired from the Public Works department.
From the time he was a boy Mike enjoyed any TV show about firemen or policemen - Emergency, Adam 12, etc. - and they were his lifelong heroes. He also enjoyed cheering on the Washington Redskins, and movies; especially any movie starring Richard Pryor & Gene Wilder, or starring Rodney Dangerfield.
Mike had a soft spot for dogs, including the family dogs Domi, Tawney, Nugget, and DeeDee; and his personal dog Missy - and they him. As much as he enjoyed his work, he was also content with a retirement that was mostly quiet and centered around his neighborhood and neighbors.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father.
He is survived by his two sisters Patricia Dingus and husband Bob of Johnson City, TN and Veronica Marsh and husband Mike of Bristow, VA; three brothers Daniel Zellmer of Ferrum, VA, Russell Zellmer and wife Katja Duesterdieck of Corvallis, OR, and Fredrick Zellmer and partner Jill Glesner of Richmond, VA; eight nieces and nephews; and many aunts, uncles and cousins in MN, GA and FL.
A Celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 20 at 12:30, at the Regency Park Villa’s Clubhouse, 6281 Autumn Leaf Circle, Fredericksburg, VA.
Graveside Services will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
