Obituary of Susan Arlene Vaughn
Susan Arlene (Villani) Vaughn, 63, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, June 11th, at her home after a life-long fight with type 1 diabetes. Born in Framingham, Massachusetts, she was the beloved daughter of the late Guerino (“Sonny or Joe”) Villani and Jean Louise (Grudak) Villani. As a child she lived in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Maryland and ultimately, Virginia where she chose to remain after college. Susan graduated from Stafford High School in 1979, and she attended Marymount College in Arlington, Virginia graduating with a degree in fashion merchandising. After staying home to raise her daughter, Ashley, she focused on a career with several non profits in Fredericksburg, included Hotline and FAHSS. She ultimately transitioned to roles in patient advocacy at both Prince William Hospital and Mary Washington Hospital before retiring in 2018 due to health issues. Susan was most proud of her role as “Grandma” to Ashley’s sons, Jack and Clark. She loved every minute she spent with them, and they brought so much life, love and laughter to her days. She was also a wonderful Aunt “SueSue” to her many nieces and nephews, who will all miss her tremendously. Susan continued to stay involved with her “Stafford High School Class of 1979” alumni group, and she absolutely loved Jimmy Buffet. She was a Parrothead since high school after first seeing him at Kings Dominion in the 70’s. Although she did reside in Virginia, she was a devout New England Patriots fan. She cherished her annual trips to Nags Head with Ashley. Susan was the heart of the family and lovingly took her grandfather, Chester Grudak, husband of Louise, into her home in Virginia for the last several years of his life. She made countless trips to Pennsylvania to help care for both her mother and father as they both faced extensive illnesses prior to their passing. Susan is survived by her daughter, Ashley L. Dougherty and her grandsons, Jack and Clark. In addition, she is survived by her brothers, Daniel J. Villani of Etowah, Tennessee and Kenneth S. Villani, husband of Deborah, of McDonough, Georgia, as well as her sister, Lauren C. May, wife of Christopher, of Malvern, Pennsylvania. She is also survived by her beloved nieces and nephews: Joe, Molly, Joshua, Kendall, Sophia, Victoria, Sawyer, Henry, Erin and Piper. In addition to her parents, Susan was proceeded in death by her nephew, Charles Patrick Villani. The family would like to especially like to thank Susan’s support warriors: Marianne, Linda, Helene, Christy, Marsha, and Cindy who drove Susan to so many appointments and helped her so lovingly when her family could not. A visitation for Susan will be held Monday, June 24, 2024 from 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, 1621 Emancipation Hwy, Fredericksburg, Virginia 22401. Following the visitation will be a funeral mass from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 1009 Stafford Ave, Fredericksburg, VA 22401. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the “Save the Manatee Club” at, a foundation established by Jimmy Buffet.
