
Alan had lived in Gadsden for the past 80 years. He moved here from Birmingham in 1932, along with his mother, Ethel, and brother, Marvin. Alan and Marvin were founders of Marvin's Hardware.
Alan was well respected in the lumber and building supply industry and had many friends throughout the country.
He was an active member of Temple Beth Israel and served in several leadership roles. Alan was a member of the Patriots Hall of Honor. He served on the boards of SouthTrust Bank and Riverview Hospital. Alan was active in civic endeavors and served as president of Etowah County Boys Club, Board of Episcopal Day School, Board of YMCA and Board of the Child Advocacy Center,
Alan was an ardent supporter of the University of Alabama football. He served as Captain of the Gadsden Quarterback Club for two years and helped bring famous and outstanding speakers to their meeting.
Alan was the founder of the Old Goats Luncheon Social Club. This club was enjoyed by a group of close friends that met for lunch every Friday at different locations.
Alan was preceded in death by his son, Lawrence Cohn.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte J. Cohn; son, Jeff Cohn; grandsons, Adam (Jennifer), Bryant Cohn, Alex Cohn; granddaughters, Rachel Cohn and Molly Cohn. He was so very happy to be looking forward to the birth of a great-grandson in May.
Rabbi Jonathan Miller, of Temple Emanu-El in Birmingham, will conduct a memorial service at 2 p.m. today at Collier-Butler Chapel.
Friends are invited to join the family following the memorial service at the Fish Market Restaurant on Rainbow Drive (U.S. Highway 411).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gadsden Cemetery Fund at Temple Emanu-El (205-933-8397), or the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Alabama (256-546-5437).
