Charles Austin Wood

Charles Austin Wood 86, of Southside, AL, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, August 28, 2021, The family will have visitation Wednesday, September 1, from 6pm – 9pm and Thursday from 11am – 12:30pm with Graveside services at 1pm at Rainbow Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Collier-Butler will be officiating.

Charles was a lifetime resident of Etowah County, he served in the U.S. Army, and he and his brother operated Wood Brothers Grocery for over 40 years, a family business in operation since 1954. He was very active in the community making sure that families were taken care of whether it be providing opportunities to own a home with affordable payments, with food to individuals that were house bound or families experiencing hardship. He sponsored a little league baseball team for many years providing the youth in the community an opportunity to participate in a sport and be a part of a team. In his retirement you could always find him at one of his grandchildren’s events or staying busy at his barn working on anything and everything, mastering the art of piddling.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Elizabeth (Tyler) Wood, Parents: Marvin Wood and Mazie Thornton Liddle (Ohio), Brother: James (Jimmy) Wood (Ohio) and Sister: Joan Baker (Ohio).

Charles is survived by his sons: Dr. Gregory Wood (Crystal Childress), Timothy Wood, and Jody Wood, Brothers: H.E. (Gene) Wood and Robert (Bobby)(Thelma) Wood. Sister: Louise Gandee (Ohio) and many nieces and nephews. He was the proud grandfather of 5 grandchildren: Trenton Wood, Spencer Wood, Darby (Hunter) Sims, Keila Wood and Hunter Wood as well as 2 great granddaughters, Sunny Sims and Isabella (Izzy) Sims.

Charles never met a stranger and always had something to say or do to make you laugh. He was full of life and had a full life. He will be missed by all that knew him.
