
Josephine Claborn Sherrer, age 91, in the context of God’s mercy and grace, peacefully departed this life on January 11, 2013 in Dothan, Alabama, surrounded by her loving family. Her family invites you to her funeral and the celebration of the gift of her life which will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, January 18, 2013 at Twelfth Street Baptist Church, Gadsden, Alabama with graveside ceremony to follow. The Reverends Dr. Troy Morrison, Paul Murphy and Craig Carlisle will lead the service.
Mrs. Sherrer will be buried at Friendship Cemetery, west of Boaz, Alabama, along side her husband of 54 years, Snow M. Sherrer. The family will receive family and friends at Collier-Butler Funeral Home, Gadsden, Alabama, on Thursday evening, January 17, 2013, between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. and also at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 18, 2013 at Twelfth Baptist Church prior to the funeral. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services is directing.
Mrs. Sherrer was born in Boaz, Alabama, and grew up on the family farm on Sand Mountain in Etowah County, Alabama. She was a loving and devoted wife of 54 years and was a loving mother who, as a dedicated Christian, built bridges to God for every member of her family and extended family. She constantly said that “she loved people” and demonstrated that love to everyone she encountered in her life.
She was a lover of children and a dedicated school teacher for 35 years in Gadsden and after retirement continued to work with children as a tutor. Despite her extreme physical disabilities in recent years, her mind remained sharp, and she continued to minister to and work as God’s hand in the service of others, particularly with the staff and residents in the skilled nursing facilities where she spent her last years.
Mrs. Sherrer is survived by two sons, Reverend Dr. Harry B. Sherrer, a pastor in Statesboro, Georgia and his wife Rhonda Burk Sherrer, and Gary Claborn Sherrer, a lawyer in Dothan, Alabama, and his wife Rebecca Nabors
Sherrer, a nurse practitioner at UAB Hospital, one daughter, Joanne Sherrer Tritt, a teacher in Huntsville, Alabama, and her husband, David L. Tritt, an engineer in Huntsville.
Mrs. Sherrer was the loving grandmother of six grandchildren Jeremy Nathan Sherrer, of Portland, Oregon, Susan Brook Sherrer of Statesboro, Georgia, Nathaniel Claborn Sherrer of Birmingham, Alabama, Rachel Sherrer Blitch, her husband Will Blitch of Dallas, Texas, Jacob David Tritt of Huntsville, Alabama, and Callie Rose Tritt of Huntsville, Alabama.
Mrs. Sherrer was also the loving step grandmother and great grandmother of three additional grandchildren and three great grandchildren Elizabeth Alford, her husband, John M. Alford, their children, James and Elise of Birmingham, Alabama, Allison Corbin, and her husband, Jason Corbin, their daughter, Harper of Atlanta, Georgia and John Baskerville of Birmingham, Alabama.
Pallbearers will be Jacob Davit Tritt, Nathaniel Claborn Sherrer, Wayne Eads, Royce Head, Steve Livengood and Wayne Hill.
The family will accept flowers or memorial gifts may be made to Twelfth Street Baptist Church.
