After graduating from Gadsden High School, Kay attended Jacksonville State University, living at the International House, and earning a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education.
Devoting over 40 years to the students of Westminster/Westbrook Christian School, Kay taught nearly every subject, but her favorite was history. She also enjoyed sponsoring extra curriculum activities such as senior prom, science fair, and chaperoning a field trip to Mexico. Kay had a special place in her heart for dogs and rescued more than a few of them; she often relayed stories of their antics to her students.
After teaching for fourteen years, Kay returned to college, taking night classes, until she had earned a master-of-science degree from the University of Alabama and equipped herself to better inspire her students.
Kay was community minded, serving Altrusa International Club of Gadsden as president, vice-president, Decorator Show House Chairman and as an AIC District Board Member; the club’s contributions aided such worthy groups as the YMCA. Serving for years as Sunday School superintendent, Kay energetically ministered at Trinity Lutheran Church. She enjoyed her membership in Delta Kappa Gamma. Kay also volunteered as a resource parent for children from Big Oak Ranch.
Kay’s flair for decorating was displayed at home where she incorporated her vast collection of china and ceramic rabbits into every room. Family and friends appreciated her furnishings, warmth, and hospitality.
Kay is survived by her adoring husband of 52 years, John Charles Hooker, her daughter Sherry Hooker Williams (Bill), and two grandchildren, Anna Williams and Nathan Williams.
Kay’s promptness, eye for detail, and no-nonsense attitude will be missed.
A memorial Visitation will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church on September 15, 2024 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to Trinity Lutheran Church, Big Oak Ranch, or the charity of your choice.
