Nancy Carol Smith, age 76, of Gadsden, AL passed away on May 20, 2023, with both of her daughters by her side. She was a proud graduate of Gadsden High School. She was an avid reader who absolutely loved visiting the local libraries. Cheering for the Alabama Crimson Tide Football team was something you could always find her doing on game days. She was a Christian who loved watching Pastor Chris Hodges preach at the Church of the Highlands.
Everything in Nancy’s life was focused around her family and friends. She was a loving wife, mother, and devoted friend who loved to talk and listen at any time. Without a doubt, Nancy’s greatest joy was being “Nana”. She loved her five grandsons immensely. She had a special bond and enjoyed doing different activities with each one of them. You could often find them watching movies together, going to the library together, or talking about sports or whatever they were interested in at the time. Just a few weeks before her passing she proudly watched her grandson, Tyler, graduate with honors from the University of Alabama. Nancy loved hearing about what was going on in each grandson’s life.
She is survived by her two daughters: Kristi Matlock (Jim) and Katie Holderfield (Chad), five grandsons: Matt and Tyler Matlock and Connor, Caden, and Colin Holderfield. Preceded in death by her husband Phillip Smith, infant son Tyler Ray Gresham, mother Kathleen Lynette Ellis, father Wiley J.C. Ellis and a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins.
We would like to thank the staff of Riverview Regional Hospital and Amedisys Hospice for their excellent care, along with numerous friends who are just like family that have been faithful prayer warriors. A private family graveside service will be held per her request.
Graveside services were held Thursday at Crestwood Cemetery.
