

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Collier-Butler Chapel for Mr. Sam W. Elkins, 100, Gadsden who passed away March 7, 2014. Dr. Jay Stewart will officiate with eulogy given by son-in-law, Max Watson. Burial will be at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery, Tallassee, AL. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services Directing.
Sam was born in Tallassee, AL December 16, 1913. He attended Auburn University prior to entering the U S Army 1941-1945. He worked for Alabama Novelty House for 30 years before he retired.
He was a faithful member at Dwight Baptist Church over 62 years. He loved our Lord and all of his church family. He is at home now with Jesus!
Sam was a charter member of the Alabama City Lions Club. He was on the board of directors at the Fellowship house in Gadsden and still very active until November 2013 when he became ill.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Idell G. Elkins.
Sam is survived by two chosen daughters; Jean G. (Max) Watson and Joyce G (the late Marion) Dutey, chosen grandchildren; Keith (Amy) Brooks, Lorie (Mike) Thornton, Rex (Jennifer) Waits, Samantha (Terry) Powell; chosen great grandchildren; Justin (Cari) Chandler, Loren Chandler, Colton Powell, Paige Brooks and Sam Brooks, two chosen great great grandchildren, Brooks Bailey and Jaxon Chandler.
Pallbearers will be Max Watson, Pat Thomas, Jerry Rogers, Mike Thornton, Terry Powell, Colton Powell, Justin Chandler, Rex Waits, Keith Brooks and Richard Garnett.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Charles Garnett, Phil Garnett, Josh Garnett, Tracy Causey, Trent Causey, Gene Sharpton, Gene Burgess, Hayden Klein, Joe Bowen, Jeff Atkins, Harold Mabrey and Sams’s Sunday School Class at Dwight Baptist Church. Sam’s nephews will be pallbearers at the gravesite.
The family wishes to give a special thanks to Woodland Place Assisted Living and Gadsden Health Care Center with a super special thanks to Francina and Alice.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Dwight Baptist Church Building Fund.
Visitation will be Wednesday at the funeral home from 10 am until the hour of service at 11 am.
