Terry R. Duke

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 7, 2013, at Forrest Cemetery for Mrs. Terry Roberts Duke, 55, of Gadsden who passed away August 30, 2013. A reception will be held at The Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter following the service. Father Dennis Nichols will officiate. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services is directing.

Born January 15, 1958, Mrs. Duke lived in Gadsden, graduating from Westminster Christian School in 1976. She graduated with a Bachelor of Sciences degree from Auburn University in 1979 and earned a graduate specialty degree in medical technology the following year. From 1980 to 1981, she worked as a medical technologist at the Holy Name of Jesus Hospital in Gadsden, subsequently she was employed as a pharmaceutical sales representative for Mead-Johnson.

Mrs. Duke was a member of The Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter. She was instrumental in revitalizing the Callan Concert Series and served on its board for a number of years. As a member of the Gadsden Service Guild, she spent many volunteer hours with the children and young adults of the Snellgrove Center.

Mrs. Duke’s true passion was cooking. She taught cooking classes in her home for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), which offers educational opportunities in a relaxed atmosphere for mature adults.

Preceding Mrs. Duke in death were her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Terrell Roberts, Jr. Surviving Mrs. Duke are her husband and daughter, Mr. Walter Howard Duke, Jr. and Ms. Gann Roberts Duke. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Bea Roberts Fields (Mr. Michael David Fields) of Southern Pines, North Carolina, and Mrs. Edie Roberts Smith (Dr. Charles Eldon Smith, Jr.) of Oxford, Mississippi. Mrs. Duke has two nieces, Ms. Ann Jordan Fields and Ms. Katherine Gann Fields, and one nephew, Mr. John Terrell Fields.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Cancer Society, The Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter or The Episcopal Day School.
