Born to Clarence W. Charlton Sr. and Mary Koziar Charlton, Carl lived a life defined by love for family, hard work, and a passion for classic cars. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Randall Lynn Charlton; his brother Clarence “Bill” Charlton Jr.; his sister Martha Jean Foy; his daughter Dawn Haynes; his son-in-law Dave Crum, the late husband of Tonya; and his beloved wife, Priscilla “Pat” Browning Charlton, who passed in February 2009.
Carl dedicated many years of service as a professional engineer with American Electric Power (AEP), where he earned the respect of his colleagues for his integrity, knowledge, and commitment. During his career, he formed lasting friendships, including his best friend at AEP, Walter Wonn, who shared both professional and personal milestones with him.
Outside of work, Carl was best known for his love of MG cars—collecting, restoring, and sharing his enthusiasm with fellow car lovers. He also had a lifelong fascination with trains and built an impressive collection over the years. A man with a curious mind, Carl enjoyed technology and shared a special bond with his grandson Shawn as they built custom computers together.
Above all, Carl was a family man. He deeply cherished his daughter, Tonya Crum, and had a profound love for his grandson, Shawn Farley, whom he proudly helped raise with his wife Priscilla. In Carl’s later years, Shawn and his loving partner and longtime girlfriend, Lauren Hoskins, provided him with unwavering care, faithfully supporting him through medical needs and appointments. Their devotion was a source of great comfort and pride to Carl.
Carl is survived by his sisters Beatrice “Tommy” Callison of Bridgeport and Julia Ann Stewart-Stemple of Belington, and Julia’s husband, Jack. He also leaves behind his dear friend Shari Wetzel, along with extended family and friends who will remember his kindness, humor, and dedication.
Carl’s memory will live on in the family he loved, the legacy he built through his work, and the joy he found in MG cars, trains, technology, and the time he shared with those he loved most.
