

John Oliver Huston, III passed away on Saturday, January 29th, 2022, after a long battle with Crohn's and kidney Disease. Born in New Castle, PA, April 16, 1945, and spent his early years in New Castle, Warren, Ohio, and Sharon, PA, graduating Sharon High School in 1963 and in 1967 married his high school sweetheart (Elizabeth McGilvray Wettick Huston) who survives him after 54 years of marriage. Courtesy of the US Navy ROTC scholarship, John graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in Economics in 1967 and commenced pilot training. While he and Liz were stationed in Georgia, John obtained an MBA from Georgia Southern University. Upon completing his military obligation in 1972 they moved to Pittsburgh and John joined Mellon Bank, rising to Executive Vice President before leaving in 1990 to become CEO of The Merchants Bank in Kansas City. After positions in Boston at Shawmut and Fleet Banks they moved to Columbus when he was recruited by Huntington National Bank. Upon retiring from banking in 2000 he commenced his angel investing activities, founding the Ohio TechAngel Funds in 2004, serving as Manager until 2015. He devoted his later years to angel investing and served as the Chairman of both the Angel Capital Education Foundation (aka The Angel Resource Institute) and the Angel Capital Association. These organizations bestowed on him their highest honor, The Hans Severiens Award, in recognition of his tireless work in angel education.
John is survived by his wife, Elizabeth ("Liz") Wettick Huston and their two children and four grandchildren. Heather McDowell Huston Barkley and her husband (Andrew Joseph Barkley) and their children (Patrick John age 15; Madeline McDowell age 13) reside in Rocky River, Ohio. His son, John ("Jay") Oliver Huston, IV and his wife (Dr. Patricia Dang-Huston) live in San Francisco with their two daughters (Jasmine Mai age 9, and Jacqueline Mai age 4). John is also survived by his sister, Shelley Irene Huston of Jamestown, PA plus six nieces and nephews and their six children.
Friends can visit with the family at The Schoedinger Northeast Funeral Home (1051 East Johnstown Road 43230; phone (614) 939-4558) from 3 - 7 PM on Tuesday, February 22nd, 2022 with a brief presentation by his son promptly at 6:15 PM. Masks are required.
