Louis J. Himmer, a devoted husband and father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather, lifelong educator, and faithful Ohio State Buckeye fan, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2025. Lou was born on September 4, 1937, in Cleveland, Ohio.
He was the beloved husband of Nancy and cherished father to their daughters, Kristie and Tamara. Lou met Nancy, the love of his life, while attending Kent State University. They were married for over 62 years. His family was his pride and joy, and always his top priority. He loved deeply, gave selflessly, and lived a life of gratitude.
To Kristie and Tamara, he was their hero, protector, and constant. To his grandchildren, he was a source of stories, wisdom, and endless hugs.
Louis was a dedicated educator for 35 years, shaping young minds with patience, humor, and conviction. He believed in doing things the right way and always led by example. Lou also spent many years playing sports, lifeguarding, and coaching. His role as a basketball coach—at all levels—was more than a job; it was a calling. On the court, he taught discipline, teamwork, and heart. Off the court, he was a mentor, a role model, and a steady source of strength.
Lou and Nancy shared a love for the beach, a passion they passed down to their daughters and grandchildren. Lou also adored dogs—especially poodles—and found great comfort and joy in his loyal companions, Bentley and Bailey.
A proud Ohio State fan, Lou served as an Ohio State Redcoat for many years. He and Nancy attended countless games and followed the Buckeyes to the Fiesta Bowl and national championship appearances, always cheering with pride.
He also had a soft spot for Snoopy and collected Peanuts memorabilia throughout his life—a
reflection of the joy he found in life’s simple pleasures.
Lou loved working in the yard and had an incredible green thumb. His knowledge of plants and trees was vast, and he passed this love of nature to his children and grandchildren. His yard was more than a place—it was a reflection of the care and pride he took in everything he did.
Louis is preceded in death by his beloved wife Nancy, his parents, and his mother and father-in-law. He is survived by his daughters, Kristie Beth (Mike) Knox and Tamara Lynn (Matthew) Erick; his grandchildren, Brianna (Dayne) Wall, Alexa (Mitchell) Humphries, Luke (Katelyn) Knox, Noah Erick, and Malea Erick; his great-granddaughter, Charlie Wall; sisters, Betty Lou Noll, and Arelene Honeck.
A Celebration of Life is currently pending and being arranged by family in honor of Lou. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to plant something beautiful, take a walk on the beach, cheer for the Buckeyes, or simply spend time with those you love—in memory of Louis J. Himmer.
