Andrew Lynn “AL” Jones, age 70, died on Monday, April 15, 2013, after a brave struggle with a prolonged illness. He was a longstanding member of Hillview Baptist Church and attended First Baptist Church of Mount Olive. A graduate of Minor High School, he attended Auburn University until joining the United States Marine Corps in 1964 where he achieved the rank of Sergeant. Proudly serving his country for five years, he completed two tours of duty in Vietnam in the Artillery Division and was a member of the prestigious honor guard detail in Washington, D.C. After an honorable discharge, he worked for CSX Railroad until his retirement in 2008. A founding member of the Phantom Phlashers, a model airplane club organized over 40 years ago, he was a professional model airplane builder and avid collector of WWII aircraft models. He was a quiet soul with a tender heart who possessed a disarmingly dry wit and the superpower of common sense. God and family were his top priorities. And he never gave up on his Auburn Tigers.
Preceding him in death were his parents John Andrew and Willie Mae Jones; grandparents, Span and Novice Jones and Joseph and Flossie Mae Wells. Survivors include his wife and love of his life Jeannie Jones; brothers and sisters Glenene (Don) Stewart, Ronny (Glenda) Jones, Donna (Jim) Daniel, and Chris (Lisa) Jones, all of Birmingham; brother-in-law Chuck (Beth) Brumberlow, Brunswick, GA; nieces and nephews Kim(Derick) Baker, Kay (Bud) Huey, Daneh (BJ) Peebles, Lori (Gavin) Brown, Christen (John) Hines, Lindsay Jones, Caroline Daniel, Bo Brumberlow, and 11 great nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel on Thursday, April 18, 6:00-8:00 PM, with funeral on Friday, April 19, 10:00 AM, officiated by Reverend Doug Moore. A military burial with USMC Honors will follow at 1:15 PM at the Alabama National Cemetery, 3133 Highway 119, Montevallo, AL 35115. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made in his honor to WGIB Christian Radio, 1137 10th Place South, Birmingham, AL 35256 or Wounded Warrior Project at www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7
