Clyde Whisenant was a loving and devoted husband, Dad, Grandpa and Great Grandpa. He was totally devoted to his wife, Vonnie, and his family. Clyde was a Christian man faithful to his Lord and his church, Good Shepherd Lutheran.
A Navy veteran, he proudly served his country. He was always grateful for the opportunity to serve and for the adventure of seeing parts of the world that he never would have seen otherwise. We loved to hear his stories of his time in the Navy. Stories were encouraged about his time in the Navy and each time he told us a story, we learned a little more about his adventures.
A Barber by trade, he was very talented and had customers who would go to no one else for a haircut. Even after retirement, he had a few customers who would come to his home for cuts. He owned his own shop for several years on 20th Street in downtown Birmingham – Clyde’s Barber Shop. It was a true old fashioned shop with red and white leather barber chairs, white tile floors, a full wall of mirrors and a cash register that had once belonged to the original barber shop of the Tutwiler Hotel.
He was a fisherman and a hunter. He loved going to the hunting club and was known at the club for his wit and jokes. His favorite way to greet folks was to say “I’m so glad you got to see me today!”
We will miss Dad and his peaceful, constant and caring presence.
He is pre-deceased by his Mom and Dad, Clyde Whisenant, Sr. and Lillie Mae Yarbrough Whisenant and by his brother Bill Whisenant.
Clyde is survived by his wife of 62 years, Vonnie Whisenant; daughters Vicki Peoples (Larry) and Cindy Guthrie (Ty); 4 grandchildren, Amanda Washburn (Todd), Samantha Manning (Stephen), Katie Dillard and Cody Dillard; 2 great grandchildren, Austin Washburn and Lily Manning. He also is survived by loving nieces and nephews.
