On April 22, 2012, J. L. McCombs went home to be with his Lord after a long life of serving Him. J. L. was one of 10 children. He was born in Bradford, Alabama on October 26, 1918 to Henry Issac McCombs and Martha Jane McCombs. Preceding J.L. in death was Etta Mae, his beloved wife of over 50 years. He is survived by his children, Gwendolyn Lynn (Jimmy) of Warrior, Alabama and Jerome McCombs (Glenda) of Austin, Texas ; his 5 grandchildren, Terry Lynn (Melissa), Christy Barnett (Tim), Sonya Lawley (Marty), Adam McCombs (Esther), & Mark McCombs. He is also survived by his 7 great-grandchildren, Aaron, Jesse, Matthew (Robin), Benjamin, Daniel, Derek (Amanda) & Brittany (T.J.) and one great great-grandson, Brody.
J. L. was a coal miner and was employed by Alabama By Product and Calvert and Youngblood Coal Company for over 40 years.
Reverend J. L. McCombs heard the call to the ministry as a young man of 15. During his over 75 years of ministry he served over 20 churches and ran revival meetings too numerous to count. Even though many of us would give praise and honor for what he has done in our lives, he would be the first to give all the credit to the Lord.
J. L. loved his garden and planted it each year by March 17 without fail. He loved to ride his tractor while singing praises to his Lord. By whatever name we called him, Dad, PaPaw or Brother J. L. we will all miss him more than words can say. The family requests in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to your local church’s ministry in his memory.
A celebration of Rev. J. L. McCombs life will be held on Thursday, April 26, 2012 at 2:00 at Gardendale Ridout’s. Viewing will be Wednesday from 6:00-8:00PM and Thursday from 1:00-2:00PM prior to the service. Serving as pallbearers will be Adam McCombs, Mark McCombs, Matthew Barnett, Benjamin Barnett, Derek Lawley, & T. J. Blackmon with Aaron Lynn and Jesse Lynn as Honorary Pallbearers.
