He was born on June 16, 1945, to Raymond and Vera Nell Harris. Ron grew up in Oakman and was a graduate of Oakman High school.
He worked as a buyer and salesman for various coal companies in North Alabama. Notably, he was an executive coal buyer for Southern Company early in his career. He traveled the country in this role and there were few places he had not traversed or that he did not have a story about. In his later years, Ron could be found in a big truck hauling freight and he loved a clean Peterbilt.
Ron was known for smile, work ethic, and his love for his family. He enjoyed time at the lake on his Nautique and teaching his son and grandchildren about watersports. His lifelong dream was always to be a pilot and he loved riding in the co-pilot seat with the company pilot on sales trips. They were longstanding members of Gardendale Mount Vernon United Methodist Church. Ron was also a member of the Masons.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Gillette Woods Harris; his son, Patrick Harris (wife, Melissa); his grandchildren, Isabella Lett (husband, Coleman) and Collin Harris (wife, MacKenzie); and his great-grandchild, Troy Lett. He also came to love his multiple step-grandchildren and their children.
He was preceded in death by Raymond and Vera Nell Harris.
A visitation and funeral will be held on Saturday, April 25th at Ridout’s in Gardendale. The family will receive friends and family starting at 10 am and the service will begin at 11. There will be a graveside service following the service at Oakwood Memorial Cemetery in Gardendale. Pallbearers will be Mike Valenti, Wesley Estes, Steven Woods, Walker Woods, Michael Woods, and Ben Lett. Nephew, Matt Woods will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in his memory.
Ron will be deeply missed by those who loved and knew him, but his memory will be with us forever.
