It is with sadness that the family of Robert L. Hairston of Gardendale announces his passing away on Sunday, July 7, 2013. Robert was surrounded by family and took pleasure in knowing that his wife, daughter, and his estate were planned out and in place at the time of his death at the age of 90. His forty-seven years at the Post Office demonstrates his dedication and sense of sacrifice and responsibility. Retirement allowed him and his wife of 66 years, Geneva, to pursue other interests many of which included helping others. He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Dr. Debra Atchison, (Dr. John Atchison); sister, Nell Adams; a niece, Patricia Elfeldt; other nieces and nephews across the country, and his companion dog, Shane. Special friends include Doug Pennington, Jimmy Taylor, and long time friend, Henry Cox. Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 9th from 5 until 7 PM at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel followed by a chapel service on Wednesday, July 10th, at 11 AM. Interment will be in Oakwood Memorial Gardens.
