Barbara Herrin Powell went to her Heavenly Father on Monday, January 3, 2011. A resident of Georgetown for the past 9 years, she was 70 at the time of her passing. Born on June 21, 1940 in Stephenville, Texas to John D. and Ruby Herrin, Barbara grew up in and around Fort Worth. She graduated from Arlington Heights High School, where she enjoyed art and sports. She was the youngest of six, always introduced by her daddy as “My Baby.” She is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Ruby Lois, Nell, and Jackie, and brother Johnny. She met and married the love of her life, Billy Powell, in Las Cruces, NM. They met at the University Avenue church of Christ and were married there in August of 1962. Their only son, Curtis, was born in 1964. In Las Cruces, she worked at the library at New Mexico State University. Following her Army husband, Barbara loaded up her new-born and headed first to Anniston, AL, then on to Fort Bragg. Barbara loved North Carolina. The coast, the scenery, the history, and the beautiful dogwoods in the spring were all new and exciting. After four years there, the family relocated back to New Mexico, first to Socorro, and then Los Alamos. While in Los Alamos, Barbara was active acting as a home room mother, teaching Bible school, painting and selling her art and teaching classes in upholstery and painting at the county extension. When she returned to the workforce, she started at Los Alamos Stationers, and then obtained her Realtor and Broker’s licenses. She worked for both the Cabell Agency and Mary Deal Realty before opening her own office. Following Bill’s retirement and the Cerro Grande Fire of 2000, they decided to move closer to their son, and more importantly, their grandchildren, Kip and Quincy. In Georgetown, she made new friends and was a member of the Georgetown church of Christ. She was never happier than when spending time with the grandkids, gardening or at the coast. She had a quick sense of humor, and could light up the room with a story or a zinger. She is survived by Husband Bill of Georgetown, son Curtis Powell and Michelle Murray of Austin, grandchildren Curtis Isaac Powell and Quincy Powell of Austin, brother Bill, nieces, Carolyn James of Atlanta, GA, Diane Gillespie of Haltom City, TX, and Karen Provine of Albuquerque, NM. Private interment will precede the memorial services, to be held on Thursday, January 6 at 3:00 PM at the Georgetown church of Christ, 1525 W. University Blvd., Georgetown, TX. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 5, from 6-8 PM at the Gabriels Funeral Chapel, 393 I-35 S, Georgetown. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lifeline Chaplaincy, 1415 Southmore Blvd. Houston, TX, 77004, or other charities. The family extends its deepest gratitude to the nurses, doctors and staffs of St. David’s Hospital and ICU, Scott and White CCH and Hospital in Temple, Lifeline Chaplaincy, and the Lighthouse at Altenheim in Round Rock. ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. . . Come and share your master’s happiness!’
