Joe was a true Georgetown native, born and raised in this charming Texan town. In his youth, he was a talented athlete, playing various positions in football for the Georgetown Eagles. His skills on the gridiron eventually led him to Schreiner Junior College before he answered the call to serve his country by joining the Army. Back in Korea, Joe served alongside General Lewis during the war, displaying unwavering dedication and pride.
During his time stationed in Virginia, Joe met the love of his life, Bettye Bottoms. Their love story blossomed, and they were married in January of 1953, sharing 69 wonderful years together. The couple later moved to Austin, Texas, where they raised their daughter, Catherine McDougald.
Joe's career took him all over the great state of Texas as a Paint Salesman, and he possessed a profound knowledge of color theory, making him a true expert in his field.
Beyond his professional life, Joe was an avid bass fisherman. He traveled all over Texas, competing in bass tournaments with the Capital Bass Club, often alongside his dear friend, George. He found solace and joy on the serene waters, forming cherished memories and lasting friendships.
Joe and Bettye were dedicated volunteers for the Georgetown High School Eagle Band, actively serving as Band Boosters. Joe's exceptional commitment to the band earned him a band letterman's jacket, and their unwavering dedication inspired the creation of the Bettye and Joe Watson Award in honor of their exceptional service.
Joe's passion for football never wavered, and he held season tickets to watch the Georgetown Eagles under the Friday night lights. He could often be found in the stands, cheering on his beloved team. His dedication to football was further recognized when he was honored at a pep rally for his contributions as a football player during the late 1940s.
Joe was preceded in death by his loving wife, Bettye Watson. He is survived by his daughter, Cathy McDougald, and her husband, Craig McDougald. His memory lives on through his granddaughter, Stephanie Schneider, and her husband, Craig Schneider, along with their two great-grandchildren.
