

Paul Gene Griffith died July 20, 2014 in Georgetown, Texas. He was born in Tulia, Texas on April 23, 1932. He was the son of J. Lee and Vera Griffith. Mr. Griffith attended public schools in Tulia where he graduated from high school in 1950. He was an honors graduate in Electrical Engineering in 1954 from Texas Tech University. He received his master's degree in Electrical Engineering in 1956 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While at MIT, he was a graduate assistant in the digital computer laboratory. He received the PhD. Degree from Stanford University in 1959 where he held a scholarship from IBM and then worked as a research assistant in the Electronics Research Laboratory. He was an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering from 1960-1963 at the University of Arizona. He was a Professor of Electrical Engineering and later Professor of Engineering Analysis and Design at Texas Tech University where he taught Computer Science from 1959-60, 1963-1975. Summer employment included work with General Dynamics (Fort Worth), North American Aviation (Downey, California), Stanford University, The University of Houston, NASA (Clear Lake), and Mobil Exploration Services Center (Dallas). He always considered himself to be a teacher, even after going into industry until his retirement in 1991. He joined Mobil in 1975 where he held several different titles prior to retiring as a Geophysics Associate. As a Geophysics Associate he did research in gravity and magnetics, magnetotellurics, and seismology. He presented papers at two national conventions of the Society of Exploration Geophysics and was awarded three patents. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Judy; four sons: Mark Andrew, David Lee, John Robert, and Peter Walton Griffith and their families: stepsons, Greg Melton and Eric Melton and their families; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; his brother, Richard Lee Griffith and sister, Carolyn Griffith Dowlen and their families. Paul and Judy lived in Irving from 1987 to 1995, until Judy retired, when they moved to Georgetown, Texas. Paul Griffith loved their home on the North San Gabriel River and took great pride in carving out a niche from the hard scrabble. A memorial service celebrating Paul's life will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 1PM at the First United Methodist Church of Georgetown, 410 East University Avenue, Georgetown, Texas 78626. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the First United Methodist Church of Georgetown for the Prayer Garden Ministry, or to the American Heart Association.
