Reginald Danny (Dan) Smith, 75, of Georgetown Texas passed away on Saturday, March 27, 2010. He was born in Beloit, Wisconsin on August 8, 1934 to parents Ross Hubert Smith and Bertha Alma (Verch) Smith. Dan is survived by his son Randal Ross Smith and his wife Connie Diann Smith of Lewisville, Texas, and his son Scott Jon Smith of Sanger, Texas; his sisters Charlene Becker of Albert Lea, Minnesota, and Wanda Brohn of Clinton, Wisconsin; and his grandchildren Jessica Diann Smith and Daniel Ross Smith of Lewisville, Texas and Kent Jordan of Hutto, Texas. Dan was married to Karen Elizabeth (Dorsey) Smith on July 13, 1957 who preceded him in death. Dan served in the US Navy from 1951 to 1954. He worked at IBM for 35 years from 1956 as a Field System Engineer to his retirement in 1991 as a Programming Instructor. Throughout his whole life over and above his interest in computers Dan had a passion for flying aircraft. He built and flew model airplanes as a young boy, he worked on F2H Banshees and other aircraft while serving on the aircraft carrier USS Midway, and he obtained his private pilot’s license flying Piper J-3 Cub’s. During his time he never lost his devotion (some may say obsession) to model aviation. He built and few virtually every type of model plane from wind-up rubber band powered planes to gas powered free-flight and wired u-control planes. In the late 1960’s Dan built his first radio-controlled airplane. Since then he was built and flown hundreds of R/C airplanes and has become well known throughout the central Texas R/C modeler community as an active member and past officer of Georgetown AeroModelers Association and CenTex Modelers of Killen. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Linda Hutchinson who lived with and cared for Dan over the past year. Linda was more than just a care giver, and Dan appreciated and loved her very much. Services will be held Monday, April 5, 2010 at Cross & Crown Lutheran Church at 3800 Shell Rd., Georgetown, Texas 78628-9204 (512) 869-7729. Arrangements were made by The Gabriels Funeral Chapel and Crematory, 393 N IH-35, Georgetown Texas 78628, and Pastor Eric Harzell of Cross & Crown Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, the family also invites you to leave a message of memory via e-mail to [email protected].
