In Kansas City, Kansas on Saturday, September 19, 1936, Daryl was born into the Gayden family. The family moved to Los Angeles when Daryl was about 7 years old. Over time he became a big brother to two sisters, Henriette and Luida, whom he adored. Daryl was athletic and enjoyed participating in sports. While attending Polytech and Belmont High Schools, he played football. He loved the game so much that when he broke his ankle, he never told his parents because he wanted to continue to play. Daryl attended college where he received his degree. He later attended Los Angeles Trade Tech where he pursued his real passion, automotive mechanics. Daryl loved working on cars. Daryl would collect car parts and at the age of 15, he actually put a car together that was drivable.
Daryl married Florence Belton, and they were blessed with two lovely daughters, Ketrin and Rhumel. He loved his girls and he embraced being a family man.
Daryl had many hobbies, he was constantly taking pictures and videos, preserving precious memories and history. He loved water and snow skiing, biking and many other activities. He loved the challenge of learning. He was always busy helping others, and spending time with friends and family.
Daryl worked at the City of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, where he worked for approximately 35 years in the Automotive Department. He promoted to Supervisor and later ran the Automotive Train the Trainer Program. He retired from the City of Los Angeles in 1992. He was well loved and respected by many throughout the Department.
Daryl met Janice Gilbert while at the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. Their friendship developed into a long romantic relationship ending in marriage. They married on February 2, 2008. Their life journey together was filled with love, mutual respect, and fun. They enjoyed spending time with family, friend and church activities. Daryl attended Tri City Baptist Church in West Covina, where he used his various talents to serve the church.
God called Daryl home on Tuesday morning, March 18, 2020.
Daryl leaves to cherish his sweet memories his wife Janice Grady, daughters: Ketrin (Jerry) Earwood and Rhumel Grady, along with his sister Luida Johnson, and stepsons: Thomas (Lisa) Hite and Sean (Carolyn) Hite, 15 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents Ethelue and Murphy Grady, and sister Henriette Lyles.
