Chalo and his sister Vilma came to the United States in 1964. They arrived first in Miami, Florida and then settled in Los Angeles, California where he met his future wife, Evy Maria Jakabffy. Chalo loved his new country from the moment he arrived.
Chalo met Evy when she came to Los Angeles to visit her brother, Luis Jakabffy, who was Chalo’s roommate.
They married on June 25,1966. Their first child Alejandro was born on July 22, 1967. Their second child, Jessica Maria was born on April 30th, 1970.
Chalo secured several jobs here in the United States before eventually owning and operating a clothing manufacturing business. This experience led him to become the President of the United Clothing Contractors Association. Over time he would transition to bookkeeping and serving many of the companies he had worked with over the years. In 2019, he officially retired from bookkeeping at the tender age of 81.
Chalo enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Mexico, and Hungary. His sincere admiration for the United States led him to enjoy reading history and prompted him to visit many historical locations. He took many trips with friends, family, and grandkids. He enjoyed music, reading and culinary experiences. He especially loved reading autobiographies about important historical and political figures in the United States.
Chalo appreciated food from around the world! He loved tamales, burritos, and typical Ecuadorian, Peruvian and Chinese dishes. He especially enjoyed his Menudo on occasional Sundays with his son-in-law, Gustavo Mauri. Chalo valued and enjoyed laughter and good conversation.
On February 24, 1995, his first grandson was born. Diego was the light of his life. He spent a good deal of time with Diego and made a huge and positive impact on his life. Diego, now 26, was deeply inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit his grandfather personified, a passion that Diego now himself embodies.
On November 29, 1998, Chalo’s only daughter Jessica, married Gustavo Mauri and inherited a beautiful bonus daughter named Daniela, who today is 27. On January 17, 2005, he welcomed his second grandson, Julian Mauri, now 17. And just last year, on September 30, 2021, Chalo welcomed his firstborn great grandson, Luka. He cared deeply about his family, wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchild.
Chalo, also known as Abuelo, received a great deal of love and joy from his grandchildren. He attended many games, events, musical and sports related performances, birthday parties, Halloween parties, and graduations.
Chalo lived a good and long life filled with an abundance of love, good eating, great memories, and many adventures. He was always surrounded by people who loved, valued, and held him in high regard.
Chalo maintained relationships with his large group of friends and family. He spent several hours each day engaging in phone calls with his brothers and sisters.
He called his daughter daily to say hello and to ask about the other family members he loved unconditionally, Gustavo, Diego, Daniela, Julian, and of course baby Luka. And when he was done asking about the human beings he cherished, his attention would then turn to the many dogs that also exist in the Mauri household. He always offered his beloved daughter his daily dose of antidotes and advice and reminded her of things he felt were important for her to know and remember.
Gonzalo Alejandro Egas, Chalo, will be dearly missed. He was a good natured, funny, deep, and noble man. He was an excellent provider who always focused on ensuring that his beloved wife would be taken care of and that she would continue to live life to the fullest.
On December 18, 2021, our heavenly father decided that it was time for our beloved Chalo to join his mother, father, and sister Vilma in heaven. He leaves behind his wife of 55 years, his son Alex, his daughter Jessica, his son-in-law Gustavo, his grandchildren Diego, Daniela, and Julian, his great grandson Luka, his sisters Cecilia and Rocio, his brothers Luis Enrique and Luis Antonio and many nieces and nephews. Whether by blood or by marriage, Chalo loved you all!
Dearest Chalo, we will all miss you deeply; your physical absence will leave a huge void in the hearts of family, friends and all those who loved you. May you rest in peace until the day we meet again. We will always love and remember you.
