Hortencia Salas

Hortencia Salas Avila nació el 21 de Abril de 1956 en el Tejuján, Valparaíso, Zacatecas, México. Era la tercera de 10 hermanos de Manuel Avila y María Dolores Rodríguez. Llegó a Denver, Colorado con su tío y su prima a la edad de 14 años y comenzó a trabajar. Aproximadamente 1 año y medio después decidió mudarse a Los Angeles, California para estar con su hermana mayor, Juana García y su creciente familia. A los 18 años conoció a Claudio Salas, salieron durante un año y regresaron a Valparaíso, Zacatecas para casarse el 19 de Enero de 1976 junto con sus familias. Claudio y Hortencia decidieron regresar a Los Angeles y formar una familia. Hortencia tuvo a su hijo mayor, Claudio Salas Junior el 2 de Febrero de 1977 y a su segundo hijo Alejandro Salas el 7 de Enero de 1982. Claudio y Hortencia se mudaron a Echo Park en 1984, donde Claudio y su hijo Alejandro residen hasta el día de hoy. Hortencia continuó viviendo en la misma cuadra que su hermana Juana, disfrutaban pasar tiempo de calidad juntas, como cocinar tamales y organizar posadas para las fiestas navideñas, comer naranjas tomando el sol, e ir a Primm, Nevada a apostar en los casinos. Hortencia trabajó en la industria de la ropa durante unos 14 años, hasta que se enfermó y tuvo que dejar de trabajar en 1991. Hortencia tuvo a su hija menor, Brenda Salas, el 2 de Octubre de 1992. Fue ama de casa durante más de 20 años. En ese tiempo, disfrutaba cocinar y cuidar a sus hijos y a su esposo, además de cuidar a varios sobrinos y sobrinas mientras sus hermanos trabajaban. A Hortencia le gustaba escuchar música y bailar, especialmente norteñas. En la segunda mitad de su vida luchó médicamente con múltiples problemas de salud, pero fue una luchadora por su familia. En Abril de 2013 sufrió un derrame cerebral que la dejó paralizada del lado derecho. Durante los últimos cinco años disfrutó de la jubilación de su marido, quien se convirtió en su cuidador de tiempo completo. Le gustaba ayudarlo a cuidar a sus dos nietas más pequeñas e ir a los casinos a apostar en su tiempo libre. Hortencia era una mujer de gran fe Católica y seguía asistiendo a misa todos los domingos, confiando su vida a Dios. Finalmente, perdió su batalla contra el cáncer el 7 de Septiembre de 2024. Que descanse en paz eternamente.

Hortencia Salas Avila was born on April 21, 1956 in Tejujan, Valparaiso, Zacatecas, Mexico. She was the third of 10 siblings to Manuel Avila and Maria Dolores Rodriguez. She came to Denver, Colorado with her uncle and cousin at the age of 14, and began to work. About 1 year and a half later she decided to move to Los Angeles, California to be with her older sister, Juana Garcia and her growing family. At the age of 18 she met Claudio Salas, they dated for a year and they went back to Valparaiso, Zacatecas to get married on January 19, 1976 together with both their families. Claudio and Hortencia decided to come back to Los Angeles and start a family. Hortencia had her oldest son, Claudio Salas Junior on February 2, 1977 and her second son Alejandro Salas on January 7, 1982. Claudio and Hortencia moved to Echo Park in 1984, where Claudio and his son Alejandro, reside until today. Hortencia continued to live on the same block as her sister Juana, they enjoyed spending quality time together like cooking tamales and hosting posadas for the holidays, eating oranges soaking up the sun, and going to Primm, Nevada to gamble at the casinos. Hortencia worked in the garment industry for about 14 years, until she became ill and had to stop working in 1991. Hortencia had her youngest daughter, Brenda Salas on October 2, 1992. She was a stay a home mother for over 20 years. In that time she enjoyed cooking and caring for her children and husband, as well as providing child care for multiple nieces and nephews, as her siblings worked. Hortencia enjoyed listening to music and dancing, especially to norteñas. In the second half of her life she struggled medically with multiple health conditions, but she was a fighter for her family. In April of 2013 she suffered a stroke that left her paralyzed from her right side. For the past 5 years she enjoyed her husband’s retirement, as he became her full time caregiver. She enjoyed helping him care for their two youngest granddaughters, and going to the casinos to gamble on their spare time. Hortencia was a woman of huge catholic faith, and continued to attend mass every Sunday, trusting her life to God. Ultimately, she lost her battle to cancer on September 7, 2024. May she rest in eternal peace.
