James Vester "Jim" Gupton, 90, passed away on February 16, 2025, in West Covina, California. Born on April 22, 1934, in Henderson, North Carolina, Jim lived a life filled with dedication, adventure, and an unwavering love for family and friends.
Jim proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean conflict. His time in the service was a source of great pride, and he cherished the opportunity to reconnect with fellow shipmates at several reunion events over the years. After leaving the Navy, he embarked on a career in offset printing, even setting up a printing press in his garage for additional work. Later in life, he found what he considered his best job ever—working as a facilities manager at a real estate office. There, he became known as the office DJ and poet, bringing joy to his colleagues with weekly poems that always ended with his signature phrase: "I love this job!"
Faith played an important role in Jim’s life. As the Sunday Superintendent for TriCity Southern Baptist Church, he was always the first to arrive each Sunday morning—opening doors, lighting heaters when needed, and warmly welcoming every person who walked through the doors.
Jim was known for his boundless enthusiasm and kindness. He started every day with a song and never met a stranger. Whether it was embarking on a spontaneous road trip or simply enjoying a hot dog at Costco, he embraced life’s adventures with open arms. His warmth and respect for others left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Leana Gupton; daughters Debbie (Jim) Marshall, Kathy (Benny) Bowman, Becky (Drake) Gutierrez, and Shelly (Tracy) McClelland; step son Alan Wells, step daughters Cindy (Dave) VanHoose and Michelle Coe; 18 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren and sister Betty Jean (Troy) Preddy. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Joy Gupton; sister Jackie Ivey; step daughter Jeanette Cary and grandson Douglas Marshall.
