John A. Eras, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in San Juan Capistrano, California, on November 11, 2024, at the age of 86.
Born on June 24, 1938, in Los Angeles, California, to Frank and Lila Eras, John was the middle of three children. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Sylvia, and Gloria. He is now joyfully reunited in heaven with his loving wife, Lupe Eras, with whom he shared a lifetime of devotion and adventure.
A proud veteran, John served honorably in the United States Army Corps. Stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky, he contributed to groundbreaking work at the U.S. Army Medical Research Laboratory before his discharge in July of 1964.
John’s professional career was equally distinguished. As a Supervising Criminalist from 1972 through 2000 with the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, he earned the respect of colleagues and peers for his leadership, intelligence, and unwavering integrity. His thoughtful mentorship and dedication to serving his community left a lasting impact.
John was a man of many passions. He found joy in gardening, photography, fishing, reading, and traveling the world. Together with Lupe, he explored some of the globe’s most extraordinary destinations, including Fiji, Japan, Hong Kong, Machu Picchu, and the Galapagos Islands. These adventures, shared with dear friends and family, brought him immense happiness, and created memories cherished by all.
Family was the cornerstone of John’s life. His legacy lives on through his children, Christopher (Cristine), David (Jonnine), and Jacqueline (Jeremy); five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; his first great-grandchild; and many beloved godchildren, siblings-in-law, nieces, and nephews.
John will be remembered for his steadfast love, his sense of humor, and his commitment to those he held dear. His warmth and generosity touched countless lives, and his memory will remain a source of comfort and inspiration.
A service to celebrate John’s life will be held on Monday, December 16, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Louise De Marillac Catholic Church, 1720 E. Covina Blvd, Covina, CA 91724. Burial services will follow immediately at Oakdale Cemetery in Glendora, CA. He will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the hearts of all who knew him.
