With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Jose Luis Soto Hurtado, “Luis”, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, July 5th, 2025. Born to Adolfo Soto and Maria Hurtado on August 5th, 1951, in Villa de Santiago, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. He left a legacy of strength, laughter and a deep devotion to his family and friends.
A few years later the family moved to Guadalajara, Jalisco where he was raised along with his five other siblings. At an early age he knew the traditional school route would not be for him and joined the work force. After several odd jobs he landed a construction job in which he gained invaluable skills. They led him to build the family home alongside his father who gathered the materials and his sister who aided him in every step of the build.
In the early 70s he followed his 2 older siblings in search of the American dream as he left for California. Shortly after arriving he met his love and partner in life Maria Medina. They married shortly after in 1974 and together had six children. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last September 2024.
He was the type to want to repair something over buying something new. He would find a way to “Macgyver” things or some would call it “Mickey Mouse it” and give an item a second chance.
He led a simple life and enjoyed the time spent with family. He loved camping, scouting good yard sales, walking at outdoor swap meets, family BBQs, his Dodgers “#34 Valenzuela”, football “Cowboys”, collecting tools and rare coins. Did we mention he loved good food? Tamales, carnitas and chicharrónes were his favorite.
His silver hair that became a part of who he was at a young age was ICONIC and always admired by many. His “SMILE”, that smile lit up every room, it was infectious. He was a prankster, the life of the party and an expert at issuing nicknames. His laughter and zest for life were always to be admired. There was never a dull moment in his presence.
Always a hardworking man that provided for his family and made sure they were always taken care of. He valued hard work, honesty and always kept his word. A more honest man didn’t exist. Throughout his life he fostered many friendships. He had six biological children, but we could say he had become a father figure to many neighborhood children that are family to this day.
The Soto family home was always open and a welcoming environment to all. Everyone was always welcome at the dinner table. He was deeply loved and respected by all that met and knew him.
He loved road trips, traveling and visiting family far and near in Mexico or Arizona to see his brother tio Charlie and family. He continued with the traditional Ensenada Fourth of July camping trip for years as the children grew older and new friends joined in the yearly trip. Great memories that will live with us forever.
His legacy left six children and six grandchildren who loved learning about his early years and experiences throughout their podcast style conversations. He was his children’s biggest cheerleader “LA MATRACA” whether it be a sporting event, awards ceremony or graduations. He loved sharing his favorite foods with the oldest, more adventurous grandkids that are now foodies just like grandpa.
He is survived by his wife Maria Medina de Soto, daughter Diana Soto (David Hernandez), daughter Norma Soto (Saul Garcia), son Michael Soto, daughter Cindy (Alan) Barrera, son Jose Luis Soto Jr, son Anthony Soto, grandchildren Natalie Garcia, Justin Garcia, Star Garcia, Nathan Garcia, Abby Barrera, and Hailey Barrera.
